Steven Wilson - Luminol (Intro)
A humble tribute to one of my musical heroes, with perhaps one of his most iconic track intros, featuring an incredibly epic lineup of musicians; the bass courtesy of the truly unique Nick Beggs, with Marco Minnemann on drums, Adam Holzman on keyboards, and Guthrie Govan and Steven Wilson on guitars.
For this one, I tried to simplify the software signal chain for my bass tone as much as possible - it's usually filled with a bunch of plugins that I copy over from one session to the other as I record new stuff.
I also tried to record with the audio coming out from my speakers instead of wearing headphones - and it makes me realize how I constantly forget how much I probably rely on hearing the strings slapping on the instrument. Feels more natural than playing with headphones (also, latency due to the digital signal processing is perhaps a bit less of a factor because of the same reason - hearing the sound of the physical instrument).
This time, I can actually write down the whole signal path fairly easily;
Lakland Skyline Joe Osborn (now known as the 44-60)
Rupert Neve Designs RNDI
Tronographic Boxidizer (this is set to a fairly grindy tone, but mixed in very lightly with the clean DI)
RME Babyface Pro (the audio interface)
Waves IR1 (with a very short studio impulse response, set to 33% wet - to simulate the room bleeding in a mic'd cab a little bit)
Waves Q10 (hi pass @ 31, +6 low shelf @ 125, -3 @ 200 Q7, +6 @ 1500 Q7, +4 @ 3000 Q7, +2 @ 2250 Q7)
Kush Audio Omega TWK
Kush Audio Novatron (compressing ~3db, super quick attack, mid release)
